I'll be at Jeff Mach's Totally Normal Event on Saturday in Whippany, NJ. Don't be deceived by the name--go see the website for the premise, which is kind of charming and may actually work. David Sklar and I will be personning (or perhaps alternately manning and womanning) a Drollerie Press table in the Talesenders' room. We'll have Closing Arguments and David's wonderful The Shadow of the Antlered Bird for sale in various electronic formats on CD, as well as some other Drollerie Press e-books. There may be readings. In the grand tradition of mystifying panel titles at cons, I find that I am to be on a panel called "Impossible Technologies." Maybe I'll talk about Madame Blavatsky's obsession with inventing a radio for communicating with the dead--anything might happen. Unlike most of the folks in New Jersey who read this blog, I've never been to one of Jeff Mach's events, but I hear they're a blast.

So now I have to figure out which excerpt from Closing Arguments to prepare in case a reading actually occurs. Any suggestions?

Well, I would have to submit that you take a reading excerpt from a bit not already available at the Drollerie Website. I like the memorial service refreshment scene with the "DO NOT DEFY HIM" post-it note and subsequent lack of explanation other than the Han Solo-esque "We have everything under control...".

I agree that a non-released scene would be best. I like the one she mentioned also but I'm gonna use this as an excuse to read the story again with an eye to what would be a good excerpt.

Have fun!

I think an unreleased scene would be great, as well.

And good luck! :D

I don't know if this is too late, I'll try to email you as well...

What about the scene where Rugosa does the banishing in the garden? I really like the sentiment of this line in particular: "Bob hadn’t even known he wished for this..."

I don't know how paganesque the crowd will be but this is one scene I like a lot. Kinda different feel from the DO NOT DEFY HIM scene but also alluding to the drama of the plot.

Let us know what you decide!

I liked this scene too. It's relatively self contained as well, which is helpful for a reading.

That's the one I ended up using. Thanks for the suggestion!

You know those ancient Greek guys whose entire profession was to recite Homeric epics? They were sort of like wandering violinists at restaurants and other publications, and for a few coins, they'd recite any scene their audience requested. I think you may have been a rhapsode in a previous life.

I first met Jeff at those old Pagan Students Association meetings, back when your mom was an undergrad.
