Dan and I want to send something to the Red Cross, but before Katrina hit, we'd already emptied the coffers for the ACLU and the birth of my niece.

It'll be a while before the Gulf Coast refugees rank tutoring among their high-priority needs, but that's the thing I have to give.

Do you think anybody would take me up on it if I did a one-day or one-weekend teaching benefit, charging my usual rate of $50/hr, all proceeds to go to the Red Cross? I've taught 4th graders their parts of speech, coached doctoral candidates through their dissertation endgames, and done at least some teaching of writing or literature at every age level and stage of schooling in between. Triage pedagogy for walk-in students is nothing new to me. All I need is a dictionary, a writing implement, a jar to collect cash in, and a table in a public place. The table in the public place is the only thing I don't already have. Possibly one of the coffehouses where I do most of my writing will be up for this plan.

I'm trying to figure out whether I'm in the throes of idiocy or inspiration. Well, okay, I spend a lot of time trying to figure that out, but this time the answer actually matters.
