Tonight I'm heading up to Forestport to host a gathering of my old college crowd. Well, just a subset of the old college crowd, but for a year with no weddings in our little tribe, ten makes a quorum. The last time I was up in the ancestral woods late enough to see the foliage turn, I was five or six years old, so I'm really looking forward to watching fall come to the Adirondacks. Here's hoping the old gaming gaggle can be enticed away from the dice long enough to take some boats out on the lake. If I haul over the rental kayaks before my friends arrive, and it's a fait accompli... Well, nothing's impossible.

Anyhow, after about 7 tonight, I won't have internet access until Monday. The cell phone's the way to find me, if anything urgent comes up. Weirdly enough, this year Forestport's got great cell phone signal, though I'll be completely out of range on the lake and up in Old Forge.

So much to do before I go!

And then next week, I'm heading down to DC on Thursday night, for Dan's sister's wedding and all its peripheral festivities. Actually, Abi and her fellow keep insisting that it's not a wedding, but rather a commitment ceremony. I'm always tempted to say, "A ceremony in which two people make a public commitment to spend their lives together in a state of mutual affection and respect, after which ceremony the state regards them as married? Why, yes, I've heard of such a thing. We even have a word for it. In English, we call that a wedding." But I don't say that. No. My in-laws are crazy to a degree that even I notice, but I do love them.

Looking at my calendar, the thought of being on the road for eight days out of the next eleven is already making me tired. At least the occasions are happy ones.
