The Wicked Storytelling Competition was a lot of fun. The challenge I drew was to retell "The Tortoise and the Hare," and I looked at the steampunk costumes on some of the listeners and knew how to send those two creatures out for their rematch.

One of the coolest things about the game was that the audience and participants cared a lot more about the stories than about the competition. Across the hall, there was free cake; the audience cheerfully delayed cake-gratification for storytelling, and then most of them stampeded out for cake when the time of judgment came. A few die-hard listeners resisted the call of cake to award me the win--a high compliment for which I thank them.

In the Jeff-Machian spirit of giving a signal boost to whatever is delightful and unusual, I want to note two serendipitous Wicked Faire finds you might like. Rabbit Stampede gave a lively performance. I'd go out of my way to hear them play again. And among the merchants' tables I found one covered with beautifully made beeswax candles that smelled like springtime. Among the table's merchants, I found Lori, one of my best friends from high school, now the chief bee person from The Bee Folks.

Jeff describes his events as a sort of three-day dim sum feast of social interactions--you never know what delectable thing will be on the next steam cart, and you're sure to find more things you like than you can possibly pile on your plate. I like to imagine I'm one of those sesame-rice spheres with the sweet red bean paste in the middle.
