John O’Neill, chief Gatekeeper at Black Gate, posts weekly about new releases and classic finds in his New Treasures and Old Treasures columns. He’s got a delightful magpie eye. The Old Treasures are an education in the history of the genres. The New Treasures are all over the map — and this week, the column lands squarely in my supernatural version of the Jersey Shore, with some very kind words about my work in general and Tales from Rugosa Coven in particular. Having read an anthology’s worth of slush, I particularly appreciate his opening line: “Unless you’ve ever been a submissions reader, I don’t think you can truly appreciate what it was like to discover Sarah Avery in the slush pile.” And the moment of discovery he recalls is of the story that turned out to be my first professional sale.
