Today my protagonist demanded a trite facial scar.

"No," I said, "you may not have a facial scar. If you insist on disfigurement, at least come up with a more original kind."

She folded her arms and said, "Oh, but wait until you see how I get the facial scar."

So we wrote that scene for a while, but then I trumped her by sending the Royal Physician in to patch her up. Now she's arguing with the Royal Physician about getting to keep her scar, while he patiently points out to her that the scar she thinks is cool when she's thirteen might not be as pleasing to her later. She'll acquiesce--the Royal Physician is very persuasive--but she'll have many occasions over the course of her life to think about the scar she doesn't have.

Nah. You should go the other way. I have a friend with a KILLER facial scar - everyone always asks if he got it in a fight, or a duel (it looks like the perfect dueling scar, and he's got the looks/swagger to pull it off!).

Nope, he just fell down when he was little, I think on the corner of a table. But he either he lets people believe whatever story they just came up with, or he makes one up for them :-)
