The Pagan review site Facing North just posted a rave review of Closing Arguments. Jeremy Bredeson's only complaint was that he wanted it to be twice as long. I hope he can settle for a long series of connected novellas.

The bit that makes me happiest is:
The interplay between the very Wiccan protagonist and his very Christian wife was beautifully done. The interweaving storylines between him and each member of his coven and their relationships with one another left me begging for more. I’m honestly anxiously waiting to see what Ms. Avery has in store for the characters in her world.

That sounds blurbworthy to me.

I know exactly what he means.

I can live with a series of connected novellas, as long as they continue forever.

The reviewer's biggest complaint was that it left him wanting more.

Oddly enough, that was my reaction as well: I want more!

Hmmm... I think the whole thing will actually work BETTER as a series of connected novellas. The reviewer wished for a longer novel, that started many years earlier; I don't think that would have been nearly as effective from a narrative point of view.

I do, however, dream of someday seeing them all published as a single collection under one cover... but still as a series of collected novellas, the way the Callahan books are nothing but collections of short stories in vaguely chronological order. :-)

You rock.

I lack the lexicon to provide you with a blurbworthy explanation of why I love the Rugosa novellas, but this guy highlights a few of the many great aspects. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] onyxtwilight, they work better as separate stories, I can't wait to buy the Rugosa Coven collection, in print, to put on my shelf.

Woo-hoo!

[damn, the spellchecker says I misspelled "hoo." Got "Woo" right, but I misspelled "hoo." It gave me the following list of suggestions: "oho, Ho, ho, Hood, hobo, homo, hood, hoof, hook, hoop, hoot, hop, goo, hoe, how, shoo, HBO, HMO, HOV, Hon, hob, hod, hog, hon, hos, hot, Koo, boo, coo, foo, loo, moo, poo, too, woo, zoo, Ho's" Anyone know how to spell hoo?]

Seriously, great news.

David

Yay! Very definitely blurb-worthy. I shall third the votes for "extended series of novellas to be published in a gorgeous omnibus edition so it can be placed on my shelves with high honors". I'm eagerly anticipating Atlantis Cranks!

I agree with the reviewer that you did a great job portraying a loving "mixed marriage" and that I WANT MORE RUGOSA STORIES. But I don't think padding Closing Arguments is the way to get more. I love all the colorful characters who are Bob's parents' friends. But when you meet someone and get to be friends with them you don't know their whole personal history at first. It comes up in bits and pieces when it is relevant. I like that you are taking time to use a novella to get to know each different coven member. (How is the latest one going?) I am quite happy to save the space on my shelf for the collected edition of Rugosa stories indefinitely as long as we get new stories as often as reasonably possible. But I definitely wouldn't mind seeing the first few as a book.
