The first leg of our journey, Rochester to Corning, saw even the locals slogging along at 30mph on the interstates, with terrible visibility and a road surface that had littered both shoulders of 390 with collisions and rescue equipment. Even when we got south of the storm, we passed through intermittent patches of light snowfall all the way home.

So, yes, I concede, Rochester did not get all the snow in the world.

Rochester's perpetual snow did, however, inspire one of my favorite sestinas. Anthony Hecht is a poet I don't usually go for, but I've always liked the sestina form, and "Sestina d'Inverno" is a really fun example.

When your other half contacted us, we were 40 minutes out... a bit West of Binghamton and heading West fast! I did see you guys heading the other direction as it was the only vehicle I saw with the roof rack storage container (aka the sail).

Whenever you guys come up this way, we would love to get together with you. And fyi - [livejournal.com profile] persipone lives in Rochester as well if you were not aware. She lives near the airport.

Glad you made it home!

Dan said he thought we would probably cross somewhere around Binghamton. We ended up needing to give Gareth some running around time in the Barnes & Noble in Vestal, and we realized we could have tried to meet there, if we'd known we would need to turn the boy loose right then.

I keep remembering [livejournal.com profile] persipone as about to move to Rochester, rather than already there. Silly brain. Must update contact info.

Happy New Year!

Now that is interesting. In Snow, my people are always insisting on taking the Thruway. In fact, I can't get DH to take any other way any more, despite 17 to 81 to the Thruway being much more scenic. Of course, there was that one time about 18 or 20 years ago when we hit serious snow on the way up at Thanksgiving, and going through that 81-17-wherever interchange of 72 lanes, with the entire thing under ice and the snow blowing, when I did think I might be about to meet my maker...

I usually insist on taking the Thruway when the weather's bad. This year the weather maps were so clear, though, about the boundary of the storm, and it turned out that getting south fast was the way to go.

My former objection to the 81 route through PA was that it was hard to find a Starbucks in all those tiny mountain towns, and I am a bit of an addict. Okay, I'm a major addict. Now that I know where to find a Starbucks about every hour between Rochester and home, my preferences are on a storm-by-storm basis.

You must be very fond of your family to visit them in Rochester this time of year.
