Gareth wanted to stick his digging implements into the sandbox handle-side-down, with their various blades and prongs up in the air. A little plastic rake kept toppling over. Cue whining. I said, in my best attempt at a non-judgmental, observational tone, "Sweetheart, you are making a whining noise. What are you trying to tell me?"

GARETH:
I'm trying to tell you AAAAEEEEEEHHH!

ME:
I see. Would you like help, or are you just trying to get something out of your system?

GARETH:
I'm trying to get AAAEEEHH out of my system.

ME:
Fair enough. If you change your mind and want help with anything, just let me know.

GARETH:
Okay. AAAAEEEEeehh. All done!

If only all his moments of whiny went that well. (Come to think of it, I wish I handled all my moments of whiny with as much grace.) Sometimes I get a glimpse of what he'll be like when his development catches up with his temperament, and I'm immensely grateful to the universe.

It's really the most amazing thing, watching their personalities develop and both you and they discovering the little people that they are now. I'm constantly amazed by Toddler/Preschooler X's personality/temperament.
