My new post on teaching and fantasy is up here at the Black Gate blog.

Those of you who are familiar with "The Eye of Argon" may wonder what could possibly have possessed me to assign it to an innocent student.

Those of you who don't know the hilarity that is "The Eye of Argon" have been missing out.

Enjoy!

This is what makes you a great teacher!

Oh, I loved our EoA readings. The ONLY way to do it is to go hell for leather.

One of my favorite assignments from high school was when my creative writing teacher wrote up on the blackboard:

"I have just this moment eaten
all of the red and juicy plums
that you were saving in
the cold ice box

And every one of which
you were most probably
patiently saving
for our morning breakfast.

Please forgive me,
they were quite delicious,
so very sweet
and oh so very cold"

and told us to take out all the unnecessary words.

How frightening is it that I read what I suspect is more than a page's worth, aloud to myself (with inflection, no less) and haven't yet started laughing? Yes, the things I read as Articles Editor and now, in legal practice, can be That Bad.

On the bright side, I'm now wanting to get to a convention to find one of those contests. :)

This reminds me, are you going to start having your bad poetry parties again for your birthday? They were so much fun.
