Now that the ink is dry on the contract, I can finally announce what I've been talking around since November: Dark Quest Books has picked up the Rugosa Coven series, and a print volume will collect Closing Arguments, Atlantis Cranks Need Not Apply, and my nearly-completed work in progress, tentatively titled And Ria's from Neptune.

The electronic editions of Closing Arguments and Atlantis Cranks will be re-released soon, possibly as soon as March, thanks to Drollerie Press's gracious parting decision to give its authors rights to all formatting and cover art. The Ria story is very close to complete now, and I've run about a third of it by my fabulous critique group, Writers of the Weird. As soon as I have a projected release date for the paper edition, I'll post about it here.

Life is very, very good.

Read your contract carefully. Dark Quest has put some weird stuff in there in the past (like saying you need to ask permission before selling reprints. This from an anthology contract). And they may take for-fricking-ever to put it out.

This is an Age of Weird Contracts. I'd give a close, questioning reading to any contract, even from a trusted friend, just to make sure we both understood the language the same way. I've found that publishers I am certain are people of good will often have not thought through the ramifications of their own boilerplate. As my lawyerly father puts it, contracts protect relationships. At least, that's part of the good they can do.

I'm at peace with the possibility of for-fricking-ever. They are novellas, and despite their orphaned form, I have been paid for them before and will be paid for them again. How often does that happen with novellas these days?

Hey, does this mean you're in [livejournal.com profile] anghara's anthology with Dark Quest? I've been looking forward to picking that one up. Doubly so, if you're in it.

I'm not in it, but my friend Keffy is, and my friend San illustrated the table of contents. Another friend was in an earlier anthology Dark Quest put out, which is my source.
