The new Black Gate post is up over here. It's a rousing call to etymology. Enjoy!

As a person who was broken pretty good in childhood, there's an odd comfort to Katniss, and a better understand of exactly why she is the way she is.

Great article - it's good to get to read you, even if it is in essay snippets. :)

I know the oddness of that comfort. Several of my grad school friends got hooked on the early Lars von Trier miniseries The Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kingdom_(TV_miniseries)), and they tried to avoid talking about it around me, because of where my own damage is. When I finally watched it, I felt as if von Trier had made it as a present just for me.

I enjoy writing the essay snippets, too, but soon I'll have something big for beta readers.

How do I find all of your posts on that site? I couldn't see any way to select, "Everything Sarah Avery has every written."
And from what I've seen, I really want you to be my English teacher. Yes, my Bachelor's is in English. I have pretended to have read more great literature than anyone I know.

Good question. I don't yet know of a way to search Black Gate for blog posts by author. When I want to check on how I phrased something in a previous blog post there, I always end up abandoning the blog's search box and just googling my own name and "Teaching and Fantasy Literature," which has been part of the title of all my posts so far.

And thank you!

I know what you mean about pretending to have read great literature. I often feel like a credentialed ignoramus. When I finished the dissertation, the old saw about knowing nothing about everything and everything about nothing was perfectly apt. Now that I've recovered from the dissertation and have had some time to get distance on that old project, I don't even know everything about nothing anymore.
