This week at Black Gate's blog, I tell the tale of the kid who composed a 12,000 word story mostly by running around his basement kicking a soccer ball with me. It was a weird teaching experience, and probably a weird learning experience. It certainly produced a weird final project, one that turned Ursula Le Guin's classic A Wizard of Earthsea entirely inside out.

I love this story! Every kid should be allowed a shadow self. But if you're not allowed one, a bit of fantasy nihilism sounds healthy. Good for him, and good for you for being as much his therapist as his English teacher.

T is reading your story. There is a great deal of delighted cackling, and he keeps having to stop to read pieces aloud to me.

She's doing much smaller writing projects but I've started using the kick a ball technique with my daughter and it is working so well! She's got horrid writer's block when she sits at a table to work but when she is in the basement kicking a ball around, she's way more motivated! Thanks for the idea!
