Started at the beginning of Chapter One this time.

Also, ran Google searches on my characters' names. The magisterial Teresa Nielsen Hayden, a senior editor at Tor, advises writers of fantasy and science fiction to run searches on made-up names because, with surprising regularity, those names are already in use by pharmaceutical companies as brand names for drugs, or by auto manufacturers. If you think about it, it kind of makes sense. We're all looking for clusters of phonemes that sound name-like, but not too much like any specific name. I'm really glad I ran those searches. I don't mind that the cavalry general turns out to have the same name as a town in the Czech Republic, but it was kind of problematic that one of my villains had the same name as a medication designed to treat urinary tract infections. Who knew? Glad I had a chance to fix it before I got too used to thinking of her by a name she couldn't keep.

Considering that I'm driving down to Rockville to help [livejournal.com profile] twoeleven out--his father's in the hospital for what may be the last time--I probably won't be adding more words tonight. Probably I'll be home again Wednesday night late or Thursday early. Just in case anybody needs to know where I am.

So what was the name of the drug? You've piqued my curiosity! =)

Who would have thought that she'd name her villain "Macrobid?"

Ah, an advantage of morcscript. I just did a few quick searches for names of gods in my FRPG world and came up mostly empty. Of course, it's not a guarantee - the name of the campaign itself - Telenor - maps to "Telephone Norway". So close...

I googled the main character in this one story I got part way through. It turns out it's a real name in French, "Gannes." Now if I could figure out how to pronounce it...

Go, baby, don't look back!
And the Googling is a fantastic idea I plan to steal...right now.

I Googled the name of a minor character that I had in mind to find that it was a minor actor that had floated into my subconscious. Ah, well. Sounds like you got a good start. Keep it up.
