My old friend D's back in town from Very Far Away for her dissertation defense. Which was today. And went well. It's been two years since Dan and I last got to spend much time with D and her wife, so we've been enjoying putting them up.
The main musical diversion before my defense was the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated," which I sang incessantly during the week leading up. The day before, I dragged poor Dan to Borders to buy a copy of a Best Of album, and then subjected him to several dozen repetitions of the song while I filled out the last of the paperwork. He was a good sport about it, even though we played it about six more times on the morning of the defense in the car on the way to Murray Hall. My husband must really, really love me.
So naturally, we serenaded D with "I Wanna Be Sedated" yesterday, when she had twenty-twenty-twenty-four hours to go.
Once D's defense was safely over, the papers were signed, and D's committee whisked her off for drinks, D's wife and we ladies of the coven gathered up the coats and forms and marked up copies of the diss, and went off to the car amid choruses of "Here Comes the Sun."
When the committee's drinking ritual was over, I drove out to pick D up and bring her home. Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" got us through the rush hour traffic.
Once we were back here with the CD collection, the Hallelujah Chorus was irresistible.
Consummatus est. Hallelujah.

Date: 2005-12-21 05:24 pm (UTC)I made one pass of small changes to the first draft of The Traitor of Imlen, but it was very clear that I was running up against the hard limit of my ignorance on several subjects crucial to the plot. Rather than write in ignorance scenes I'd only have to rip out later, I decided to shift gears.
How's yours going?
