Well, I prodded at the idea of writing a paranormal romance, mostly because I think it would be fun to work with [livejournal.com profile] alg, and because it's rare to know with any great degree of detail what an editor you admire is looking for. But the more I tried to work myself up about the idea, the more my other projects took off. Any minute now, I'll make peace with the fact that the romance genre is just not my shtick, sort of the way basketball or bungee jumping will never be my shtick. It would have been nice, though, to produce something the market favors.

The estate sale story got much weirder today than I expected it would. Bob discovered that his mother had been hiding the Black Head of Atho in her shoe closet. No, not the Blackhead of Atho, the Black Head of Atho. Why does the Black Head of Atho appear in my short story? I don't know yet. I'm pretty sure Bob's father stole it, but his motive is not yet clear.

If you had asked me this morning, "Hey, Sarah, what's the Black Head of Atho?" I would have said, "Why, it's a famous lost occult artifact, of course. You've heard of it. Just think a minute." And I'd have been wrong, because there's very nearly nothing about it on the web. Nope, not famous. Which is good and bad. Good because I can do anything I want with my new McGuffin, and who will care? The five other people who remember that page from Doreen Valiente. And bad because only those five people who object will be a position to know exactly how funny it is that the Black Head of Atho turns up in the shoe closet of the late Amelia Baines.

It's not that big a loss. Whatever purpose the story wants the Head to serve, it will serve. Besides, there's just something inherently amusing about an artifact called the Black Head of Atho. I could say that name all day. What portentous phonemes! And yet the first thing anyone thinks of who hears it said aloud is inevitably, "Have you consulted a dermatologist about that?"

the Black Head of Atho may not be a great hit with Google, but poor Doreen Valiente can't seem to be mentioned without lightning.gif or candle.gif dancing their balogna all about the screen.

Oh! and...

And... what color are Atho's other heads?

To the best of my very limited knowledge on the subject, he's only got the black one. Which makes it even more problematic that it's gone missing. Poor guy.

It was carved from black stone, but Valiente didn't mention what kind.

And yes, poor Doreen Valiente. People say revolutions eat their young, but the Pagan movement mostly seems to eat its elders.

if it makes you feel better, I've never heard of this thing before, and I think it's so awesome that I'm going to propose it as a team name for my house's intramural sports league.

Your team would then perpetually face the dermatologist question. Maybe you could work up some cheers around a benzoil peroxide theme.

If your house names its team after a long-neglected god, he may show up wanting something in return. I'm looking at Valiente's entry on Atho in An ABC of Witchcraft (1973). She did a rough sketch of the Head from memory after it was stolen. He's not a handsome deity, but he looks fairly benign.

At least, he looks benign to me, though I'm sure he wouldn't look benign to Uncle P.

For about half an hour of our writing session today, [livejournal.com profile] mischievouspie and I got stuck on her question about what color Atho's other heads were, if it was so important to specify that this was the black one. The Purple Head of Atho. The Puce Head of Atho. The Chartreuse Head of Atho. The Plaid Head of Atho. The Paisely Head of Atho.

And don't get me started on Atho's body.

I really hope he has a sense of humor. Well, look at that sketch. He'd have to, wouldn't he?

how many things can one do with a black stone head...
Maybe one you can't get rid of
Moneymaker: Auction it as an antiquity, and have it keep coming back to you.

Oh, this is your story. Phoo

I checked out Valiente's bit about him, and it turns out he's carved from oak rather than stone. My memory had prettied him up considerably--my goodness, that's an unattractive sketch.

The Black Head of Atho is more a symptom than a cause of what was wrong with the decedents. I'm starting to figure out what he's there for.
