Why You Shouldn't Hire Me As Your Wedding Planner

I've written some bizarre rite of passage scenes in my time, but the Miaaran wedding ceremony takes, as it were, the cake.

Those of you who've read the Big Book, or even just the first few chapters of the Big Book, have noticed my obsession with weird funeral customs. There are the Efa who engage in ritual grave-robbing, the Lelese who steal their enemies' souls and force them to navigate their ships, the northern tribes who skin their beloved dead to make drumheads--if there's a cultural misunderstanding to be had across ethnic or national lines, I just can't help spicing it up by having the characters insult one another's handling of the dead. If I ever get the Big Book published, no doubt this kind of thing will provoke wild speculations about my inner life.

But I'm telling you, the Miaaran wedding ceremony is weirder than any of that. In December, when I've had a chance to clean up the sentence-level infelicities, I may post it here to see if it's too weird for readers to follow. Alternatively, I may be taking such pains to describe its weirdness as to have rendered it boring. I really can't tell right now.

Today was a 3,000 word day. I'm pretty sure it's the first 3,000 word day I've had since last November. I don't know why, but it felt easy.

[livejournal.com profile] citabria had a 7K day this week. The mind boggles. I had a very few days that productive early on in the first draft of the Big Book, and they were surprisingly hard on the body.

I'm behind by a couple of thousand because I had a Totally T day yesterday. I'm glad I did.

I find that I can write 1500-2000 in an hour-90 minutes, but then I can't write anything else for hours and hours. It's like it splurges out and then has to build back up again.

What with the debugging frenzy Dan and his colleagues are in, and Nanowrimo for me, and the relatives on the phone day and night with new monkeywrenches to throw into our holiday travel plans--oh, and a Yule celebration for probably 40 people at our house on the 16th--we figured out right quickly that if we were going to have any time for each other, we were going to have to defend that time vigorously.

Just promise me that during this cold, wet, gloomy weather, I'm not going to find you typing "All work and No play makes jack a dull boy" over and over :-)

That would be one way to jack up the word count, but no, I don't think that's in the cards.

I seem finally to be hitting my stride.
