I tried to call home on my cell phone and got someone else. At first I thought it was a wrong number, but my landline was out, I wasn't dialing wrong, and the poor woman on the other end of the call wanted to know why she was getting so many calls for some guy named Dan.

Dan discovered today that his uncle had been trying to reach him for two weeks. We had no idea, because the problem was intermittent. It doesn't seem to be intermittent anymore. If you've been trying to call us at home and missing us, we're not blowing you off.

Verizon says the soonest we can expect a repair is the 5th.

So here I am at Starbucks, trying to put out the fires in my email inbox.

Anyone who needs to reach me before the 5th should probably stick to the cell phone.

It's pretty appalling. I had to explain to the supervisor at the repair center's phone bank why Verizon's cellular 911 service was not an adequate substitute for the 911 service you get on a landline. It's very basic stuff that any layperson can understand, and it should be her job to be able to explain it to people like me. A week without real 911 is alarming to a parent with a baby who's just learning to walk.

Now that I think of it, though, has there ever been decent telephone service?
