Crossed the halfway mark Friday night. Cranked out another 1007 words Saturday night. Then slept long enough to wake rested for the first time since October.

If I break 30,000 by the end of the day Monday...I'll still have a houseful of in-laws over for Thanksgiving, and I'll be unable to put any weight on my foot at all for several days because of the cortisone injection.

Let me try that sentence again.

If I break 30,000 by the end of the day Monday, I'll have a real chance at crossing the finish line with 50K. Not least because I'll be physically unable to flee the manuscript if Dan puts it in my lap, and I won't be able to clean the house for wanting to. Butt-in-chair? That'll be my only option.

I've lost 2 weeks of NaNoWriMo through having a fortnight of high temperature and feeling too crappy to concentrate. Nothing daunted, I shall begin again on Monday. I won't make 50,000 words, but I shall hopefully have kick-started myself back into the novel. I'm hoping it's OK to bring the casserole/cottage pie over tomorrow, when I believe my neck will be OK for me to drive.

From somewhere, a voice rang across the Everglades. Doc, it said, you have to pull yourself up the conveniently-located-but-untrustworthy tree root! Wayne is sacking the city! If he finds the artifact, millions will go bald! Eyebrows, too! There's still time! I've used way too many exclaimation points!

Surprised at being addressed as Doc by a voice on the air, Sarah lifted her head from where it lay on a hummock of marsh grass. Yes, it was true, if the giant robotic Wayne Newton got its hands on the warhamster, Miami was doomed utterly. Already, Miami was burning--somehow, in her heart, she knew it. Though she'd lost faith in her powers, she had to try. "One must persist," she told herself, "even in the absolute absence of hope." And with that, she put aside the spectacles that were her disguise, put aside her life as the mild-mannered (well, all right, the occasionally ascerbic-mannered) Sarah Avery, pressed the secret code into her class ring, and rose in her marvelous tweed/spandex superhero costume.

It was as Dr. Pretentious that she reached for the conveniently located but untrustworthy tree root, and as Dr. Pretentious that she clambered up from the gully to the roadside. Even from Okeechobee, the smoke of the burning city could be seen.

Dr. Pretentious pulled an exclamation point from her utility belt, and she was on her way.
